@Launchpad in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
The book launch of (H)afrocentric: the Comic Volume 3 is HERE!!! Saturday, March 8 from 7-10pm (H)afrocentric will present A LIVING COMIC BOOK. The book launch will install part of (H)afrocentric: the Comic's built environment. In Volume 3, the background functions as its own counter narrative of gentrification, hip hop culture, Tyler Perry’s inexplicable success and racial inequality. The environment is the probable future. The justice is in the fantasy. Pyramids grace the streets of Oakland, CA with the Wu Tang Clan making up the majority of the population. Parades and Easter celebrations are dedicated to the resurrection of Tupac Shakur rather than Jesus Christ. Altars are dedicated to Bruce Lee, nun chucks, house slippers and Orishas. Block Parties are staged, foreshadowing the coming justice for long time community members.
With the help of (H)afrocentric's illustrator Ronald Nelson, architects and interior designers, Akima Tahanee & Shawn Whitehorn, we will build an installation that brings the background and set of the comic into a physical space. Gallery participants will have a chance to experience the space interactively as they will be enmeshed in the comic book.
